One of the discussions on the course was around the importance of diversity on boards, and in particular increasing the number of women and that led to the usual cries of how these things backfire and that quotas are bad… the reality for me is that diversity is so complex and way more than a gender discussion and has the possibility of bringing insight and understanding and reconciliation across so many parts of our lives.. And then last night I went to Angel Place to listen to “Harmonics uniting the world” … yet another theme all about diversity and the hope of music adding a certain balm to our fractured world… and in the perfect acoustics of the venue it moved from my heart-opening favourite gregorian chants to Islamic exalted songs of prayer with Whirling Dervishes on stage… I thought this tiny poem, “Flower in the crannied wall” by Alfred Tennyson was a fitting completion to my blog week…
Flower in the crannied wall,
I pluck you out of the crannies; —
Hold you here, root and all, in my hand,
Little flower — but if I could understand
What you are, root and all, and all in all,
I should know what God and man is.
